Yamacraw Village demolition still pending, residents’ council voices concerns

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) — As the plans for demolishing and rebuilding Yamacraw Village are still pending, the Yamacraw Village Residents’ Council (YRC) is advocating for people who live there and want to return after the project is done.

According to officials, the 315 public housing units have deteriorated beyond modern standards. About 90 families still live at Yamacraw, while the other units remain unoccupied and boarded up.

“That is contributing to a continuing health and safety hazard within our city,” Mayor Van Johnson said. “I intervened last year to ensure that there was communication between the residents’ council and the Housing Authority of Savannah. They had what I believe was a very fruitful, thoughtful and thought-provoking meeting.”…
