Apartment fire displaces families, cause under investigation

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) — More than a day after a destructive fire tore through the Georgetown Oaks Apartments, the aftermath still paints a stark picture of just how intense the blaze was. While emergency crews have cleared the scene, investigators remain focused Monday morning on a critical question of what caused the fire.

The fire broke out just before 4 a.m. Sunday, quickly spreading through the building and causing extensive damage. Officials say 22 of the 24 units were affected, and part of the structure collapsed during the fire.

Chatham County police officers were the first to arrive and immediately began rescue efforts. In a dramatic scene, officers helped save a mother and her two children from an upper-floor balcony. The mother dropped her children down to officers waiting below, who were able to catch them safely…
