Routine arrest in Metter leads to multi-agency investigation

METTER, Ga. (WSAV) — A routine arrest by the Metter Police Department (MPD) on March 27, 2026, has led to a larger, multi-agency investigation.

At approximately 1:45 a.m., MPD observed an SUV traveling on I-16 at a high rate of speed. A chase ensured with the fleeing vehicle reaching speeds in excess of 135 mph.

When the vehicle came to a stop, MPD called for back-up and arrested Jeffery Jerome Burton, 25, of Savannah.

Burton was charged with reckless driving, possession of marijuana (less than 1 oz.), possession of a firearm or knife during the commission of a crime, obstruction of law enforcement officers, driving while license revoked or suspended, fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer and speeding in excess of maximum limits.
