At least a dozen manatees were temporarily stranded on Hutchinson Island in Savannah recently.
The Savannah River is among five rivers in Georgia with tidal estuaries that provide salt marsh forage for manatees migrating north during the summer, according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. These deep-water channels also offer escape routes for the threatened species when necessary.
