Growing petition calls for an end of reverse lanes in central Phoenix

PHOENIX (AZFamily) — A petition to end reverse lanes in central Phoenix is growing. More than 4,000 signatures have been gathered by people and business owners who call the lanes unsafe and dangerous.

Rush hour reverse lanes make the middle lane on parts of 7th Street and 7th Avenue a southbound lane in the morning and a northbound-only lane in the evening. The lanes serve as a turning lane during other times.

The special lanes date back to the 1980s. Phoenix’s street department points to a study four years ago that found that removing the lanes would increase travel times by 40% during rush hour and make intersections more prone to crashes.

The owner of Hatch-It on 7th Avenue and Missouri said the lanes are “the worst thing they’ve ever come up with.”…
