Chaos ensued on the Loop 101 in Scottsdale as hot asphalt flooded the freeway, following a crash involving an overturned dump truck. The incident which took place early Friday afternoon, has caused significant disruptions. According to a report by AZFamily, the southbound lanes of Loop 101 (Pima Freeway) near Thunderbird Road were littered with debris from the collision that involved multiple vehicles around 12:30 p.m.
The Arizona Department of Public Safety reported that the accident, resulted only in minor injuries despite its dramatic nature. Clean-up crews toiled for several hours on the scene, as they contended not only with the spilled asphalt but also with the leaking fluids from the damaged truck. Traffic was eventually restored to normal flow around 4:45 p.m., with the HOV lane and two other left lanes being among the last to reopen, according to AZFamily.
The disaster did not end there, as another portion of the Loop 101 became the scene of a similar incident. ABC15 reported that a truck also lost its hot asphalt load, shutting down the southbound Loop 101 Pima near Raintree Drive.
