Armed suspect dead after standoff prompts police shooting in west Phoenix

PHOENIX (AZFamily) — A domestic violence call escalated into a deadly standoff with police in west Phoenix on Sunday morning.

At about 6 a.m., officers responded to a report about a fight at an apartment complex near 43rd Avenue and Medlock Drive, just north of Grand Avenue, according to the Phoenix Police Department. Investigators say a man, woman, and the woman’s young daughter were at the apartment.

Phoenix Police spokesperson Lorraine Fernandez said that when officers arrived, they found the woman and child trapped behind a locked back patio gate.

Officers used a Halligan tool, an emergency tool used to pry doors and cut locks, to force the gate open after the woman reported the man had cocked a gun. Both the woman and child got out safely…
