First-generation student earns scholarships to ASU

For two years after high school, Kevin Carreño saved his money, determined to pay for college despite the financial barriers he faced as a first-generation student and a Dreamer.

Carreño, 22, is a visa recipient who, like many Dreamers — immigrant children who grew up in the United States — couldn’t access in-state tuition in Arizona until 2022, when voters passed Proposition 308. This month, he graduated from Glendale Community College with an associate degree in computer science.

In August, he’ll start classes at Arizona State University’s Barrett Honors College, pursuing a bachelor’s degree and career as a software engineer…
