Watch: Unclaimed emu gets new sanctuary home in Washington

Feb. 2 (UPI) — An emu found wandering loose in Washington has a new home at a sanctuary after no owner came forward to claim the large Australian bird.

The Kitsap Humane Society said the emu, nicknamed Elliot, was captured last week with help from the Washington State Patrol, the Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office and the Washington State Department of Transportation.

The emu was taken to a barn temporarily while investigators tried to find its owner.

The flightless bird went unclaimed for more than 72 hours, leading the humane society to find it a new permanent home at the Center Valley Animal Rescue.
