Will the Michigan Wolverines’ Defense Be Able to Contain Will Rogers in Game 6?

In a rematch of last season’s championship matchup, the Washington Huskies will face off against the Michigan Wolverines this Saturday. While the betting odds currently show Washington as the favorite, if Michigan’s running game is as effective as it has been for the last 3 games, the Wolverines could still prevail.

According to FanDuel Sportsbook, Michigan is currently a 1.5-point underdog against Washington. The over/under is set at 40.5 points. Regardless of the betting odds, I believe Michigan will come out ahead on October, 5th. Michigan’s main game plan with be to control the time of possession and keep Will Rogers off the field for as long as possible. If the Huskies end up playing from behind, then Rogers could feel rushed and cause turnovers.

In order to win, the Wolverines’ defensive line will have to contain Will Rogers, but that’s easier said than done.

What Are Will Rogers’ Strengths

  • A high completion percentage: Rogers has a very high completion percentage and is the only quarterback (from a top team) in the Big Ten who hasn’t thrown an interception yet this season. Rogers has completed 110 of his 147 pass attempts (a 74.8 completion percentage) for 1,354 yards (270.8 yards per game). So far this season, he’s thrown for 10 touchdowns (averaging 2 TDs per game). Measuring adjusted yards gained per pass attempt, Rogers is averaging over 9 yards per attempt.
  • Impressive passing yards: Rogers is currently one of the top passers in the Big Ten conference. He is currently third in total passing yards through five weeks of regular season play.
  • Incredible pocket navigation: Rogers navigates the pocket far better than than most college quarterbacks. The Huskies have a talented offensive line which also helps to limit pressured throws. Rogers’ has incredible awareness in the pocket and has not thrown an interception yet this season.
  • Positive leadership: Rogers’ locker room leadership is far and away better than most other college QBs. He’s been able to connect with players from all different backgrounds and lead them effectively.
