What’s behind Washington’s shrinking apartments?

Renters in Washington could be excused for feeling squeezed both in and outside the pocketbook.

A recent report by RentCafe pegged the U.S. cities with the largest and smallest new apartments across the country’s 100 largest renter hubs as of February 2025. It also identified where apartments saw the biggest gains in square feet over the last 10 years compared to the previous decade.

Seattle ranked first among cities with the smallest new apartments, the report found. Units completed between 2015 and 2024 averaged 649 square feet. That’s down 57 square feet, or 8%, compared to “older rentals.”…
