Former Washington soldier pleads guilty after attempting to share secrets with China

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – A former United States Army Sergeant, who last served at Joint Base Lewis-McChord in western Washington, pleaded guilty on Wednesday after attempting to share military secrets with China, the U.S. Attorney’s Office announced.

Officials said 31-year-old Joseph Daniel Schmidt pleaded guilty in the U.S. District Court in Seattle to two federal felonies including attempting to deliver national defense information and retention of national defense information.

Schmidt now faces up to 10 years in prison and is scheduled for sentencing on September 9.
