Muddy tire tracks lead King County deputy to hoard of stolen cars in wooded encampment

KING COUNTY, Wash. — Sheriff’s officials in King County have returned at least six stolen cars to their owners after an alert deputy stumbled upon an unauthorized encampment in the woods near Maple Valley.

Earlier this month, the deputy was driving on the Maple Valley Highway just east of Renton when he saw muddy tire tracks leading up a hill.

“When he saw that, bells went off in his head and he said ‘I should go back and investigate that’,” said Sgt. James Ryan with the King County Sheriff’s Office. “When he went back and walked up that muddy hillside, he noticed there were eight vehicles stashed back there.”…
