A 29-year-old man was arrested yesterday in Seattle after setting a recycling dumpster ablaze beneath an occupied apartment building and subsequently assaulting police officers. The incident, responded to by officers at around 1:26 a.m. in the First Hill neighborhood, saw the Seattle Fire Department (SFD) tackle the fire on the 600 block of 9th Avenue. According to SPD Blotter, the fire caused significant damage to the dumpster, with melted lids and the contents burned.
A witness described how they had seen the suspect rifling through the recycling dumpster earlier that night with a long fluorescent tube light, only to return later to find it smoking and on fire. SFD firefighters concurred that the individual at the scene matched the witness’s description. Officers encountered the man, still in possession of the fluorescent light, about a block away and engaged in a physical altercation when attempting to detain him, during which the suspect struck the officers before being subdued.
The situation could have escalated dangerously as the SFD determined that the fire was initiated underneath residential units with vehicles parked close by. The building itself was at high risk due to the absence of a sprinkler system in proximity to the dumpster.
