Nearly $20 Bil Project to Expand Seattle Light Rail Underneath Downtown

SEATTLE, Wash. – A general contractor has not yet been selected for a bold, nearly $20 billion tunneling project that will build 11 miles of additional track and 13 new light rail stations to carry passengers beneath the surface across downtown Seattle.

Sound Transit is currently working on environmental permitting and more in preparation for construction of a 4-mile extension in West Seattle and a 7-mile Ballard Link segment. Construction is an anticipated to commence in 2027.
