First-generation graduate goes from bachelor’s degree to doctoral pursuit

SHREVEPORT, La. — A phrase Karina Jimenez has heard throughout her life from her Mexican American family has helped guide her educational journey.

“Échale ganas” — roughly translated as “give it your all” — became the foundation that carried the Stonewall resident to a bachelor’s degree from LSU Shreveport and acceptance into pharmacy school at the University of Texas at Tyler.

Jimenez graduated from LSUS in May with a degree in biological sciences and a concentration in cellular and molecular biology. As the first person in her family to earn a college degree, she said the accomplishment reflects the sacrifices and support of her parents and extended family…
