Shreveport mayor wants pressure on owners to repair, sell vacant downtown buildings

Though he’s delaying action until there’s been more time to share the news, Shreveport Mayor Tom Arceneaux is laying out his plan to revitalize vacant downtown buildings. Arceneaux is proposing an ordinance requiring owners of vacant downtown buildings to register them with the city, as well as setting standards for their upkeep. Arceneaux hopes the ordinance will be a means of forcing those owners either to restore their buildings to a working and safe condition or sell them so they can be returned to the city’s active commerce, a move that would be one more tool in the city’s arsenal as officials continue the struggle against landlords whose unattended structures are a blight on Shreveport.
