The Shreveport Fire Department battled blaze Friday morning at an apartment complex deemed a public health and safety emergency by Shreveport Mayor Tom Arceneaux.

SFD was dispatched about 5:25 a.m. Friday, Oct. 11, to the 1000 block of Quail Creek Road — Jolie Apartments — on reports of heavy black smoke coming from the vacant apartment complex.

Firefighters arrived on scene several minutes later. Upon arrival, firefighters discovered heavy smoke and flames coming from the vacant building.

According to Calvin Baker Jr., chief of Special Operation and Safety, SFD had to work through water pressure issues after laying more than 1,000 feet of water supply line from the nearest working fire hydrant.

With the efforts of 16 Shreveport Fire Units, the fire was contained to one apartment building.

According to SFD, no injuries to any citizens were reported, but a firefighter was transported to a local hospital after suffering non-life-threatening injuries after debris from the burning roof fell and struck the firefighter.
