At a time when several Shreveport apartments have been making headlines for deplorable conditions, Lakeside Gardens had some good news.
Several city leaders posed Wednesday morning for photos to celebrate the $38.1-million investment that will fuel a renovation of the 55-year-old apartment complex.
“This is a welcome change,” State Sen. Sam Jenkins said. “I am extremely pleased that we are continuing to invest in the urban core, the inner-city areas.”
The complex was built in 1969 as the vision of the Rev. Amos Terrell, who, at the time, pastored Lakeside Baptist Church. The 88 units contain apartments with 1, 2, 3, and 4 bedrooms.
“Given the age of the property and lack of upgrades, it was becoming increasingly difficult to provide quality affordable housing,” said developer Jasmine Winston-Wilson. “Without these renovations, Lakeside Gardens would cease to exist.”
During the renovation, an additional 22 units will be created, bringing the total to 110.
“These renovations allow us to continue to serve generations to come,” Winston-Wilson said.
