Shreveport, Caddo Parish offering free sandbags to citizens ahead of inclement weather

The City of Shreveport and Caddo Parish are offering free sandbags between Tuesday and Friday to residents to assist with predicted flooding and severe weather.

Sandbags are available at no cost; however, there is a limit of 15 bags per vehicle.

Where and when can citizens pick up the sandbags?

  • City of Shreveport Streets and Drainage Warehouse, 3825 Mansfield Rd., from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. (Tuesday through Friday)
  • Caddo Parish Department of Public Works, 1701 Monty St., from 7:30 a.m.−3:30 p.m. (Tuesday only)

In the aftermath of a severe storm, navigating the streets safely is paramount. To assist motorists in safely navigating through post-storm challenges, the City of Shreveport offers the following guidance:

  • Treat traffic lights as 4-way stops: If traffic lights are out due to power failures or damage, treat intersections as four-way stops. The first vehicle to arrive should stop, and then has the right of way. If vehicles arrive at the same time, the vehicle to the right has the right of way. Be especially courteous and cautious.
  • Reduce speed and increase distance: Roads may be slick and debris-strewn after a storm. Reduce your speed and increase following distance to allow for unexpected obstacles or sudden stops.
  • Stay informed: Keep abreast of road closures, detours and weather updates through local news sources or official channels. Avoid unnecessary travel in heavily affected areas.
  • Use headlights and signals: Ensure your vehicle’s headlights are on, even during the day, to increase visibility for yourself and other drivers. Use turn signals well in advance to communicate your intentions.
  • Watch for fallen debris: Be vigilant for fallen trees, branches or debris on the roadway. Proceed with caution and report any hazards to local authorities.
  • Avoid flooded areas: Do not attempt to drive through flooded roadways, as water depth can be deceiving and pose significant dangers. Turn around and find an alternate route.
  • Patience is key: Traffic congestion and delays may be inevitable during post-storm cleanup efforts. Exercise patience and refrain from aggressive driving behaviors.

By adhering to these safety tips and exercising caution, drivers can contribute to safer roadways and facilitate the post-storm recovery process.
