The Magnolia Pit in Shreveport has become a unique destination for barbecue lovers from all over the Ark-La-Tex. Chef John Strand and his crew at Magnolia have made a name for themselves, not just because of the delicious barbecue they’re serving up, but they’re also known to cater big events with celebrities like 50 Cent, Billy Zane, John C. McGinley, Kevin Duran, and many others. Strand always seems to be in the mix with epic events, but now, he is stepping down and taking his apron off.

A Big Change is Coming For Magnolia Pit, Chef Strand is Passing the Torch

Chef Val Benn and Taneia Benn are the ones who will be taking over Magnolia Pit. Chances are, you have had Chef Val’s cooking at some kind of food festival or food competition before, and Taneia Benn has also been in several bartender battles. To say that these two have a devout following in Shreveport is an understatement; they have been gaining fans all over town with their food truck 86’d.

In his retirement announcement to K945, Chef John Strand shared his heartfelt thanks to Shreveport and Bossier City for over 20 years of “stirring up good times” and “seasoning life with a dash of love.” With his signature humor, he quipped it was time to “take my apron off and hang up my spatula,” adding, “if life ever gets too spicy, just add a little sweetness and if it gets too hot in the kitchen, just turn off the stove and order a pizza.”

Chef Val Benn expressed her surprise at Chef Strand’s retirement announcement, revealing to K945, “Never saw it coming.” However, Benn and her partner embraced the opportunity to buy The Magnolia Pit, especially since Chef Strand considered them the “perfect replacements.” They added, “We are excited to keep his legacy going and make our own in the process,” noting Chef Strand’s support for a smooth transition, whom Benn affectionately calls “The Godfather of The Magnolia Pit.”
