You will also hear folks talk with a politeness that you just don’t hear in many parts of the country. We say “ma’am” and “sir” out of respect. This has a slew of meanings ranging from “you’re not the brightest bulb” to “I really feel sorry for you.” I bet I hear this Southern phrase at least once a day.
