Caddo Correctional Center over capacity as state inmates await transfer

SHREVEPORT, La. – Caddo Correctional Center is once again over capacity, housing 1,542 inmates — 42 more than the Louisiana fire marshal allows.

Caddo Parish sheriff’s officials say the jail has repeatedly exceeded its limits in recent weeks, in part because the state has not picked up inmates who have already been sentenced to prison. Currently, 84 inmates who should be transferred to state facilities remain in Caddo’s jail.

The overcrowding is compounded by a lack of judicial resources. Last year, Caddo judges proposed adding another judge to the criminal section to speed up cases. That measure failed because of the additional costs.
