Over $14M coming to Red River wildlife refuge to conserve 3,000 acres of waterfowl habitat

Duck hunters and birdwatchers rejoice — the Red River National Wildlife Refuge is getting $14.6 million to buy and conserve over 3,000 acres of waterfowl habitat for public use.

The money, announced Thursday by the Interior Department, is part of $54 million raised overall that is going to waterfowl habitat purchases at four refuges in three states.

“These new areas on national wildlife refuges will help bolster wetlands conservation and increase habitat for migratory birds and other wildlife while expanding outdoor recreation opportunities for surrounding communities,” said Brian Nesvik, director of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, in the announcement. “Millions of visitors come to national wildlife refuges across the nation annually generating direct benefits for local economies and communities.”…
