Remembering Booker T. Washington High School: 75 years of promise, pride, purpose

SHREVEPORT, La. – From transistor radios to MTV and now streaming Booker T. Washington High School has withstood the test of time.

When it was built in 1950, Life magazine featured the school in an article highlighting its innovative architecture and strong academic programs. This year, the school is celebrating its 75th anniversary.

It was built for Black students because Central Colored High School was severely overcrowded. And it’s important to remember that in 1950, schools in Louisiana and across the South were still segregated.

The kind of education Booker T. Washington students received back then with a focus on academics and real-world skills is in line with what many schools are now returning to in preparing students for the future…
