For the past nine years, El Cabo Verde has hosted an annual Día de los Muertos Dinner featuring five incredible dishes perfectly paired with premium tequila. While Brooke Balderas may not be Mexican, her love for the culture, driven by a desire for her children to know their roots in Oaxaca, Mexico, has made her a devoted student. She is always quick to share fun tidbits about Mexican food, tradition, and agriculture.
Masterminds in Shreveport: The 2024 Tequila Dinner
The 2024 dinner focused on authenticity and education. The Balderas family flew in tequila makers and a vanilla bean farmer directly from Mexico, allowing every guest to meet the experts behind the spirits in their cups. It was an immersive experience, saving everyone a flight and a hotel stay while delivering a masterclass in Mexican flavors.
Día de los Muertos Explained: Beyond the Movie ‘Coco’
This year, the couple hyper-focused on the Día de los Muertos celebration and what it looks like for the Shreveport community. Observed on November 1st and 2nd, Día de los Muertos is a Mexican holiday that honors and celebrates the lives of deceased loved ones through vibrant, festive rituals.
The Balderas family reminded guests that this holiday is for everyone; it’s a way to keep our loved ones alive through joyful expression. To celebrate, you can create a home ofrenda (altar) with offerings like food and marigolds, focusing on celebrating the life your loved ones lived.
