SHREVEPORT, La (KTAL/KMSS) – Great expectations for a shrinking city are being discussed among city leaders as they prepare for the city’s master plan. With the main message being there is projected to be less people but more land.
City council heard the master plan presentation during Tuesday’s meeting outlining the history and forecasted trends for the city’s population needed for capital planning.

The report notes Shreveport lost 10,000 jobs and 21,000 residents between 2010 and 2022. The report also projects the city to have fewer people by 2050 which affects the overall tax base needed to support services. However officials said as the city has annexed more property over the years, there is set to be more land area available for future growth.
“That is a statewide trend here that Louisiana as a whole is projected to lose population in the coming decades. There’s a reality here that Shreveport might have fewer people but it’s going to have a lot more land area that it did. That creates some really interesting challenges here when it comes to city planning,” said the representative behind the presentation.
