8 kids killed: What led to accused gunman Shamar Elkins’ killing spree

SHREVEPORT, La. (KTAL/KMSS) — On April 19, eight children were killed in what police are calling a domestic incident in the Cedar Grove neighborhood.

Authorities say Shamar Elkins opened fire inside the home, killing seven of his own children and injuring three others. The family is now speaking out about what led up to the shooting.

“So I know there was some infidelity going on, she didn’t necessarily express it to me, but she did come to me and asked me about helping her file for divorce,” Crystal Brown, a cousin said.

Brown said the children’s mother, Shaneiqua Elkins, was scheduled to appear in court Monday, the day after the shooting. She believes this is what triggered the attack.

Elkins was shot nine times and remains hospitalized. Her sister Keosha Pugh is also hospitalized suffering from a broken pelvis from trying to escape from the roof.

The tragedy runs even deeper for this family. Uncle Lionel Pugh said about 20 years ago, in the same month, both sisters lost their mother in crossfire…
