‘We overstepped’: Role of Shreveport ‘liaison’ for mass shooting victims’ families questioned

Questions about how a Shreveport City Council employee managed a role as a liaison with families victimized by the murder of eight children on April 19 have led to a change in plans to coordinate support and planning going forward — and expectations are there may be less of both.

The council employee who since the murders has served in an unofficial role coordinating with family members no longer will do so with any of that work sent to the city attorney. Some council members said unclear instructions led that employee to go too far while trying to help them.

Eight children were murdered and two women shot in Cedar Grove. The suspect, Shamar Elkins, died soon after in Bossier City while the Shreveport police who’d chased him there fired at him. The murders shocked the conscience of the city, leaving many still grieving…
