Man in crisis on bridge prompts road closure near Prince George’s County polling location

PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY, Md. (DC News Now) — Police said a man who was in crisis Tuesday sat on the fence of Whitfield Chapel Road as it passes over Route 50 in Lanham.

Prince George’s Police Department (PGPD) posted about the situation on its X account. The initial post at 5:17 p.m. explained that negotiators were communicating with him and that there was no threat to the community. Police asked people to avoid the area if possible.

That area was where a polling location for the Maryland primary elections was.

PGPD acknowledged questions that people had about the status of that polling place, Mt. Calvary Baptist Church, located at 5128 Whitfield Chapel Rd. Police said that despite the situation, the polling place was open.

Maryland Department of Emergency Management (MDEM) also acknowledged the situation and concern, noting on X that it and the Maryland State Board of Elections were aware of the police activity, which prompted the closure of the ramp for Route 50, which led to the church. In threaded posts, MDEM provided alternate routes for people who were attempting to vote and stated: “Voters can also visit Prince George’s County Board of Elections 1200 Mercantile Ln # 107 Largo, MD 20774 to vote a provisional ballot.”…
