MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. (DC News Now) — Firefighters said a cigarette that someone threw away outside a home in the Wheaton area started a house fire that put five people out of their homes Monday.
Pete Piringer, spokesman for Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service (MCFRS), said the flames from the fire, which was on Valleywood Drive near Kayson Street, spread up and into the home, damaging its second floor and attic.

More than 50 firefighters responded to the fire and crews were able to put it out. Damage to the home was approximately $120,000.
