Western Maryland region braces for possible federal government shutdown

WILLIAMSPORT, Md. ( DC News Now ) — Marylanders are bracing for another federal government shutdown.

All the drama is on Capitol Hill but in Western Maryland, the impact could hit home.

In Williamsport, the National Park Service maintains the scenic C&O Canal along the Potomac River which could be shut down. John Platt and his wife were enjoying the canal towpath Monday.

“The Park Service does a great job of keeping this trail clean,” Platt said. “There are activities everywhere here so it would be a big bummer if they are not able to continue doing what they are doing.”

For Marylander, Cedric Faulk, a Park Service shutdown would put a damper on his plans for being outdoors as spring temperatures approach.

“When it comes to fishing, it is getting warm outside,” Faulk said. “People are going to want to enjoy the parks for recreation, soccer, fishing hiking, walking the trails here.”

Other federal operations in the region could be affected.
