Parents push for Montgomery County Public Schools to restore opt-outs, ask Supreme Court to hear case

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. ( DC News Now ) – Some Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) parents have their sights set on the Supreme Court.

Parents in the county want the ability to keep storybooks that cover gender and sexuality out of their students’ hands. It’s something they lost last year after the Montgomery County School Board revoked parental opt-outs.

Following the School Board’s decision, a group of parents sued the school district, however, the ruling was upheld by the district and circuit courts. Now, the parents want the Supreme Court to hear the case.

“You can opt your children out of music class, out of Halloween parties, Valentine’s Day, but only as to these books are you not even allowed to know when your children read them,” William Haun, the attorney representing the MCPS parents, said.

Haun said the parents’ religious beliefs are at the core of their fight.

“The Montgomery County School Board in March 2023, issued a public statement saying, ‘Despite what we said yesterday,’ and I really do mean like yesterday. The day before they made a public statement saying that we have opt-outs and that’s fine. ‘So, despite that not, we’re actually not allowing opt-outs anymore as to these books,” he said.
