Multiple people, pets displaced in Montgomery County fire

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. ( DC News Now ) — A townhouse in Montgomery Village caught fire on Monday night, displacing multiple people and their pets.

At around 7:30 p.m., Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service (MCFRS) crews responded to the 19700 block of Greenside Terrace for a structure fire.

Once at the scene, firefighters noticed flames through the roof of the end-of-row home. Pete Piringer, an MCFRS spokesman, said the fire started outside, on the exterior of the home, and extended to the attic.

Piringer said the fire appeared to be accidental in nature, caused by an electric meter and other combustibles.

He estimated damages were around $130,000. Multiple occupants and several pets were displaced, but no injuries were reported.

Neighbors called 911, but the smoke alarms from inside of the home did not go off or alert residents due to a lack of interior smoke, Piringer noted.

The fire was knocked down by 7:35 p.m.
