Monte Tyree Johnson, a 29-year-old resident of Washington, D.C., has been indicted on a federal charge for unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon. This indictment is a part of the “Make D.C. Safe Again” initiative, a move to amp up public safety efforts in the nation’s capital.
Johnson, who had previously served time for voluntary manslaughter, was detained based on the charges laid out within a criminal complaint that had been filed earlier on March 20. Moreover, Johnson was seemingly in violation of the terms of his supervised release when U.S. Marshals took him into custody on March 19, a day after they observed him to casually leave a residence with a black crossbody bag in hand.
As reported by the U.S. Attorney’s Office of the District of Columbia, authorities arrested Johnson without incident and during the process found evidence of further criminal activity. “Upon arrest, it is alleged that investigators observed the same black crossbody bag next to the bed Johnson had been occupying. In plain view, a high-capacity ammunition feeding device was protruding from the bag,” according to an official statement.
