ANNAPOLIS, MD—Maryland’s Board of Public Works, comprised of Comptroller Brooke E. Lierman, Governor Wes Moore, and Treasurer Dereck E. Davis, voted this week to eliminate 502 state government positions in a move expected to reduce state general fund expenditures by $32.5 million across Fiscal Year (FY) 2026 and FY 2027.
The cuts are part of an ongoing initiative to reduce the size of the state’s workforce and rein in spending. Of the 502 positions eliminated:
- 332 were part of the state’s Voluntary Separation Program (VSP), which offered buyouts to employees who chose to leave state employment.
- 170 were vacant positions within the Executive Department.
The elimination of these positions is projected to save the state $10.5 million in the current fiscal year (FY 2026) and an additional $22 million in general funds during FY 2027.
