MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. — If you’re a resident in Montgomery County and use plastic bags as trash bags or just everyday uses, now might be a good time to stock up on canvas bags and totes. Bring your own bag tax law will take effect on Jan. 1, 2026 and bans plastic bags at retailers.
Some customers and types of bags are exempt from this law. Plastic bags will still be allowed for prescription medications from pharmacies, fresh produce, meats, and seafood and dry cleaning and garment bags. Stores can offer plastic bags but they will have to charge $0.10 per bag. Half the charge will go to the county and the other half will go to the retailers.
The $0.10 paper bag does not apply to customer’s playing with SNAP, WIC or other state-approved food assistance benefits at a grocery store and restaurant takeout and delivery orders…
