Multiple schools in Maryland announce closures for Thursday

MARYLAND — A continuing winter storm impact and dangerous cold conditions have led many Maryland public school systems to cancel in-person classes or move to virtual instruction on Thursday, January 29, 2026. The cancellations come as snow cleanup and icy road conditions persist in much of the state following a significant winter storm earlier in the week.

A number of large school systems across Maryland have released official schedules for Thursday:

  • Anne Arundel County Public Schools will conduct virtual learning Thursday, with instruction starting later in the morning.
  • Baltimore County Public Schools plans to shift to virtual instruction on Thursday and Friday due to ongoing hazardous conditions.
  • Carroll County Public Schools will be closed for students on Thursday, with cancellations of after-school activities.
  • Cecil County Public Schools will continue with virtual instruction for the rest of the week.
  • Harford County Public Schools are closed Thursday, with no after-school or evening programs.
  • Howard County Public Schools have announced closures for Thursday.
  • Montgomery County Public Schools remain closed Thursday due to a code red weather designation.
  • Prince George’s County Public Schools will also be closed Thursday, with emergency personnel only required to report.

In Charles County, students will not attend school on Thursday, Jan. 29, as that day has been rescheduled as a semester break day. Staff are expected to report under a Code 2 schedule.

Officials have consistently cited icy roads, snow-covered sidewalks and dangerously low temperatures as the primary reasons for continuing closures and altered schedules, even as cleanup efforts continue across the state…
