Lanes reopen after gas leak at Northwood High School construction site

All lanes of University Boulevard in Silver Spring have reopened Thursday afternoon after closing due to a natural gas leak resulting from a ruptured line at the construction site of Northwood High School in Silver Spring, according to Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service (MCFRS) officials.

MCFRS spokesperson Pete Piringer said in a social media video Thursday afternoon that MCFRS crews were dispatched to the construction site for Northwood High, located at 919 University Blvd. West at roughly 12:15 p.m. Construction to rebuild the school has been underway since a contract was awarded for the project in December 2023, according to school board documents. Northwood High School is operating out of Charles Woodward High School in Rockville while its facility is being rebuilt.

Piringer said a 4-inch gas line had ruptured and was leaking after excavation equipment struck the gas line. Piringer said on social media and that MCFRS and gas crews were assisting and that there were no evacuations needed, as most residents near the leak were sheltering in place…
