Maryland Departments say DHS’ process for permitting Williamsport ICE warehouse was rushed in new letter

WILLIAMSPORT- A ten-page letter released today by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, the Maryland Department of the Environment, and the Maryland Department of Transportation looks to slow-walk rehabilitation at a new facility in the Williamsport area of Washington County.

Issued on March 5th, the letter titled, “Early Notice and Public Review of a Proposed Activity in a 100- to 500-Year Floodplain for ICE Detention Processing Center in Washington County, Maryland” lays out concerns that were already posed by Maryland Attorney General Anthony Brown two weeks ago in a federal lawsuit. That lawsuit would see Brown say that the project was being pushed “behind closed doors, and without the requisite environmental review, public participation, or state consultation.”

Specifically, the Maryland Departments in their latest letter have tried to assert their jurisdiction over State Waters, Potentially Impacted Wildlife and Aquatic Species, Sewer lines, Wetlands and Waterway Permit Requirements, and Clean Air Act Permit Requirements…
