SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO)– We have been talking a lot about rain chances in KELOLAND recently, and it is much welcomed, as over 90% of KELOLAND is now in drought.
Our latest drought monitor update was released Thursday morning, and unfortunately, it showed no improvement. One of the more notable changes was the return of severe drought to the Sioux Falls area, along with extreme drought spreading across northern South Dakota.
Another area under extreme drought is Rapid City, and it comes as no surprise when looking at its rainfall totals so far this summer. The Rapid City airport has recorded just under 2 inches of rain. This currently has them ranked as the driest summer on record. Sioux Falls, Aberdeen, and Pierre are also sitting below their climate normal.
With more chances for moisture in the forecast for the end of the week, hopefully we can nudge these totals a little closer to average before the arrival of Meteorological Fall…
