SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — South Dakota’s secretary of corrections and the warden of its state penitentiary agree: staffing is a concern.
It comes at a time when the state’s recidivism rate of 50%, per the latest annual data, is in the spotlight. And change is on the horizon, too; a new women’s prison is set to open soon in Rapid City, and ground was broken earlier in 2026 on a new men’s prison in Sioux Falls.
“Probably the one thing I would say is probably the staffing part,” Corrections Secretary Nick Lamb said Monday when discussing challenges. “I mean, we do need more posts. It’s not necessarily staff; it’s posts.”…
