Construction season is winding down. Here’s our weekly look at what projects are done, where you’ll find traffic impacts and what’s scheduled next as long as the weather holds.
What’s done
Russell Street: Work on Russell Street between Interstate 29 and the South Dakota State Penitentiary east of Minnesota Avenue was completed Oct. 30. This project consisted of full- and partial-depth concrete repairs, curb and gutter repairs, and concrete joint resealing. The intersection of Russell Street and Westport/Louise avenues also received an asphalt overlay as part of this project.
What’s underway
72nd Street North: Work is nearing completion on 72nd Street North between Seubert Avenue and 476th Avenue, also known as Minnehaha County Highway 125.
Crews completed the asphalt paving and striping last week.
This week, as weather allows, crews will fine-grade the topsoil, install grass seed and mulch, and place the gravel shoulders.
72nd Street North is expected to reopen to traffic later this week or early next week, depending on the weather.
Cliff & I-229: Work also is nearing completion at the Cliff Avenue and Interstate 229 interchange.
Crews have finished the concrete paving on Cliff and I-229 and are working on finishing the guardrails, sidewalks, traffic signals, grading, topsoil, seeding, mulching and pavement striping.
Cliff Avenue was closed overnight on Friday so crews could remove forms and a canopy from under the new northbound I-229 bridge.
All lanes are expected to be open to traffic no later than Nov. 20.
Marion Road: Progress is continuing at the new railroad overpass on Marion Road north of Interstate 90.
Box culvert construction, retaining wall construction and bridge pile construction will continue through the rest of this construction season.
The bridge itself and concrete paving will take place in 2027.
Marion Road will remain closed over the winter until the end of next year’s construction season.
Cliff Avenue: Various lane closures began on Cliff Avenue between Tomar Road and the Tuthill Park entrance on Oct. 28 to allow crews to perform concrete repairs. The exact location of the lane closures will vary as the work progresses, but at least one lane of traffic will be maintained in each direction at all times. This work is expected to be complete this week.
Sixth Street: The outside westbound lane of Sixth Street closed between Shepherd and Cleveland avenues on Oct. 30 to allow crews to perform sidewalk repairs. This lane closure will be in place intermittently through this week…
