Scam callers disrupting daily lives

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — Millions of Americans are interrupted each day by scammers and Sioux Falls resident Peggy Merrow is no stranger to their tricks.

“It’s disruptive terribly. You have to steel yourself to ignore it or swipe down and refuse to answer,” said Sioux Falls resident Peggy Merrow.

Merrow says she gets about five scam calls a day.

“They call me at 8:30 in the morning. I’ve had three calls this week. 8:30. I’m still reading my book and having my coffee,” said Merrow.

The South Dakota Better Business Bureau says imposter calls are the most common. But keep in mind, government agencies like the IRS, Social Security and Medicare will never initiate communication over the phone.

“If the first time you ever hear is that the IRS is calling you, we’re gonna tell you to hang up the telephone and that no such thing is happening,” said South Dakota Better Business Bureau Vice President Jessie Schmidt.

It’s not just government agencies that they impersonate.
