Grief over fallen officer goes far beyond in South Dakota

SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO) — There are heavy hearts within law enforcement agencies across South Dakota following the death of Moody County Chief Deputy Ken Prorok. That includes the Sioux Falls Police Department and the Minnehaha County Sheriff’s Office where there are support systems in place to help grieving officers.

Law enforcement agencies pull together whenever a fellow officer dies in the line of duty. Even those who didn’t work with Moody County Chief Deputy Ken Prorok or knew him at all are feeling the loss.

“I think it’s something that’s part of the family of law enforcement, we take care of each other,” Sioux Falls Police Chief Jon Thum said.

Prorok’s death underscores the dangers officers face every day.

“Obviously, we go through a lot of effort and training to try to prevent these types of things. But everybody’s also still aware that it still happens. So, there’s sadness and some resignation and we’re going to continue to get to work and do what we can,” Minnehaha County Chief Deputy Jeff Gromer said.
