FLANDREAU, S.D. (KELO) – Law enforcement in Flandreau, Moody County and beyond are mourning the death of Chief Deputy Sheriff Ken Prorok.
40-year-old Joseph Hoek of Sioux Falls is charged with first degree murder and aggravated eluding in this case.
It was a foggy morning as deputies escorted Hoek into the Moody County Courthouse. It’s been three days since he’s accused of leading law enforcement on a high speed chase on Highway 34. It ended with the death of Chief Deputy Prorok near the near the Colman exit on Interstate 29.
Attorney General Marty Jackley says Prorok was placing spike strips on the highway.
“An eyewitness indicated he saw an intentional swerve and that Chief Deputy was hit and killed at the scene,” Jackley said.
According to court documents, that witness attempted to give Prorok first-aid until law enforcement could get there. Once officers arrived, the witness ran after Hoek and held him until authorities caught up.
