Council to consider new parking rule in DTSF

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — During an upcoming Sioux Falls City Council informational meeting scheduled for Tuesday, council member Jennifer Sigette, will present her pitch for a new parking ordinance in downtown.

The ordinance would be tacked onto the existing parking regulations and would prohibit vehicles between 9th and 13th Street along Phillips from taking up too much space.

Specifically, parked vehicles would have to be short enough that they do not jut out into the street.

Vehicles would be prohibited from parking, “in such a manner as to leave available less than ten feet of the roadway from the portion of the vehicle nearest to the center line of the road.”

Sigette explained the rational to KELOLAND News over the phone, noting that Phillips Ave. between 9th and 13th St. narrows to 28-feet from the center line to the street curb.

With this width, Sigette said that vehicles would need to be shorter than 18-feet long to park. This shouldn’t be an issue for most, she noted, adding that a Chevy Tahoe — coming in at about 17.5-feet — will fit within these parameters.
