Brookings’ food forest supports sustainability

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) – The City of Brookings is starting a community food forest to support sustainability, agriculture and food insecurity in the city.

Food forests are small gardens with diverse edible vegetation that mimic the natural forest ecosystem. The Brookings food forest is set to go next to the CDouglas Chittick Community Gardens.

“It’ll be a place that is open to the public so that they can come and get the fruits or the berries, or even the herbs or the other plants that are planted around the fruit trees basically,” said Robin Buterbaugh, Brookings Sustainability Council…
