Nonprofits echo other ways people can help the homeless

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) – The city of Sioux Falls is making it known that giving out money to people on the street isn’t the best way to support those experiencing homelessness. A new campaign (Cash handouts don’t help, but you can) is using signs and social media to let people know about the different ways to help people in need.

St. Francis House is one local nonprofit that provides transitional housing. CEO Julie Becker has witnessed firsthand why giving cash out doesn’t help in the long run.

“We have seen incidents of people getting into a fist fight because one person got money and the next person didn’t. We’ve seen the unpleasantries of what they leave behind which is not always the best. If it’s garbage and litter, that’s one thing, but when it is vomit and feces, that is not fun to have to go and clean up after someone has done that,” Becker said.
