‘Check Washing’ thieves are stealing mail in KELOLAND

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — A Sioux Falls-based credit union is warning people about thieves stealing checks out of mailboxes. They then take those checks and alter them to steal money out of your account. The crime is known as check washing.

This appears to be a check for $4,000 written out to a woman, but it’s not.

It’s a forgery created by a check washer. The thief has removed the original ink using chemicals.

She then increased the amount to $4,000. Last week, she brought it to the Levo Credit Union on Louise Avenue, walked up to teller Trysta Johnson, and tried to cash it…
